Our Budtenders at Weedjar explain what Sativa is and where to find it in Scarborough and Eglinton

Most people now know that there are different types of cannabis strains, and the most common differences when choosing cannabis are boiled down to three groups: Sativa, Indica, and Hybrid.

For a consumer, this is an easy way to ask for what you want in a more general sense. Most budtenders understand what the consumer wants by asking if they are looking for something that elevates their mood, something in-between, or something for utter relaxation. Weedjar carries a variety of Sativa selections at our dispensary in Eglinton.

We’ve created a guide for what to look for when you’re buying Sativa in Scarborough. We want to share a little more information about what Sativa is, what it does, how to understand the plant, and how it’ll work for you. Read more below to find out.

Sativa vs Indica: What’s the Difference?

In the late 1700s, all cannabis plants were classified as Cannabis Sativa by the Swedish Botanist and Taxonomist named Carl Linnaeus. It wasn’t until 1785 that another biologist, Jean-Baptiste Lamarck, actually identified another species of cannabis in India. The cannabis plants in India (Indica) were dense, shorter, and had more psychoactive properties. It was then when the two species were separated and where we got Indica and Sativa.

The Sativa plants were taller and lankier, and they grew in more warm, humid, and balmy temperatures.

Typically now, Indica and Sativa are used to specify the shape and structure of the plant – rather than the specific chemical properties of the plant.

Finding Sativa in Eglinton: Understanding the Basics

If you’re looking for a Sativa blend in Eglinton, our budtenders at Weedjar know how to find an effect that will do just that. Sativa is more of a general categorization of the plant, and it is widely understood now that cannabis is a lot more complex than we once thought. The cannabis plant is made up of chemical compounds that cause a variety of effects, especially when they are mixed with other chemical compounds that occur naturally. These are called cannabinoids and terpenes.

For a refresher, a cannabinoid is a naturally occurring chemical compound found in a cannabis plant – this includes CBD and THC.

Cannabinoids and terpenes play a huge part in the overall feel of how a strain will make you feel.

So, What is Sativa?

Knowing what we know about cannabinoids and terpenes, we can start to deduce how a chemical variety (or strain) will affect someone. It’s largely believed that Sativa plants are known for their ability to energize, enhance focus, and create an uplifting mood that pairs well with exercise, going out and being social, or working on something fun and creative! While this is accepted by mainstream cannabis culture, there has been some push back from cannabis retailers to divest from using Sativa as an indicator of a strain as it mostly refers to botany and not the chemical varieties in a plant. Most budtenders, even our own at Weedjar in Eglinton, differentiate strains this way simply because it’s easier!

What Are the Effects of Sativa?

Sativas are known to produce an energetic high. This is the desired outcome if you’re looking to be productive, whether that productivity means you’re going on a hike, cleaning your room, or doing something creative.

Sativa’s are also known to be a lot more stimulating than Indicas. Because of the stimulating effect that Sativa can have, this can also produce adverse effects in those who are anxious. Sativa makes your mind more active, anI if you’re an overthinker, we suggest trying a hybrid with an Indica dominant rather than a Sativa!
