It wasn’t until 1785 that another biologist, Jean-Baptiste Lamarck, actually identified another species of cannabis in India. The cannabis plants in India (Indica) were dense, shorter, and had more psychoactive properties. It was then when the two species were separated and where we got Indica and Sativa. 

The Sativa plants were taller and lankier, and they grew in more warm, humid, and balmy temperatures. 

Typically now, Indica and Sativa are used to specify the shape and structure of the plant – rather than the specific chemical properties of the plant.
